Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between a PDF and an eBook?

A PDF is an electronic document that has a fixed layout. It is viewable on all types of devices but the view and layout cannot be adjusted based on the viewing device or viewers preference. PDF documents have page numbers as the page layout does not change and are easily printable.

An eBook is formatted for ereaders (such as Kindle) and the format can change based on the users preference such as font size and other viewing options. Ebooks do not have page numbers so the flow of the document can change based on the viewers preference and they cannot be printed.

  • How do I print the Field Guide?

Our field guides are all downloadable as a PDF file or an ebook. The guides are viewable on all devices and easily printable. We recommend sending the file to a print center (office depot, staples, etc) which is as easy as sending a link to the email associated with the print center. Request that the field guide be printed double sided and bound. The guides are many pages and sometimes staples don’t hold them together well.

  • Should these Field Guides replace our medical oncologist or cancer center’s advice?

Heavens no! We always recommend you follow the advice of your own cancer center doctor, NP/PA, or nurse over our advice because they have actually met you and don’t know your particular circumstances. We recommend you show the Field Guide to your cancer center providers to make sure they agree with the advice we are giving you.

  • What is a NP (Nurse Practitioner) and a PA (Physician Assistant)?

NPs and PAs are medical professionals that practice medicine. Both work very similarly in day to day practice but there are some differences in our training. Both NPs and PAs are trained to assess patient needs, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnose illness and disease, prescribe medication and formulate treatment plans. In cancer care, we often work part of a team that includes a physician, a NP/PA, and a nurse.

  • What is the difference in training for a NP and a PA?

A nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse. Nurse practitioners are educated at a master’s or doctorate degree level with training that focuses on basic disease prevention, coordination of care, and health promotion. Nurse practitioners often specialize their training based on patient population.

A physician assistant is a medical professional who often has thousands of hours of medical training prior to entering PA school. PAs are versatile and collaborative. Physician assistants are educated at the master’s degree level and trained in the practice of medicine using a curriculum modeled on a medical school education.
