We get many questions from our patients regarding what to eat while receiving treatment. Here are some answers to a few of the questions we receive along with some tips on nutrition and treatment.
What should I eat prior to chemotherapy?
On the day of chemotherapy, we recommend eating a small and light meal before you arrive for treatment. Having small snacks throughout the day can be helpful. Be prepared for treatment with some snacks that you enjoy. Just add them to your treatment bag for the day.
Can I eat during chemotherapy?
Of course. Most cancer centers offer food and snacks while you are there for treatment. Most centers also allow for you to bring in food. Ask your cancer center what foods they offer so you are prepared prior to starting chemotherapy.
Are there foods I should avoid on the day of treatment?
Avoid greasy and fatty foods. We suggest not showing up for treatment overly full or on an empty stomach.
Tips to make eating easier on the day/week you receive treatment:
Shop prior to your treatment and stock your refrigerator with healthy, easy to make foods.
Prep some meals ahead of time and place in tupperware in your refrigerator or freeze to keep fresh longer. Separate into meal sized portions. This will make meal prep easier when you aren’t up for cooking.
Alternative to prepping food ahead of time is to purchase healthy ready made frozen meals to have on hand.
Keep a grocery list of food items you need and foods you like. This allows family or friends to take your list and shop for you.
Be open to receiving meals from family and friends or simply asking for help. There are meal train apps and websites that can make this easy for others to coordinate.
