Better Beauty
We believe in controlling what we can control. Right?! This philosophy extends to limiting our environmental exposure to chemicals and toxins - when we can - in our efforts to prevent disease and promote health. And although we realize we can’t escape all our exposure to chemicals, we can do a lot to moderate this exposure.
According to National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is estimated that as many as 2/3 of cancer cases are linked to environmental causes. Many of these are personal lifestyle factors that can be modified, like smoking or reducing exposure to the sun. Some are harder to tackle on our own like, air and water quality.
A great place to start reducing environmental exposures are with products we use everyday.
What’s in your shampoo or bathtub cleanser?
What about toothpaste or eye cream?
So…first up: Clean beauty products
Here at Field Guides to Cancer Care, we spend a lot of time and energy making sure that we are fueling our bodies with healthy, wholesome, healing foods. Trying to drink plenty of clean water, getting quality sleep, and caring for our bodies with a mixed fitness program. I avoid pesticides, choose organic when possible and hold my breath when I walk past a neighbor’s yard who just dusted with ant killer. I do all of this, but I wasn’t paying much mind to what I was putting ON my body. It was a disconnect – and one I’ve worked to right size (with baby steps) for years.
Here top 5 products to avoid:
Triclosan
Phthalates
Polyethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, and Other PEG Compounds
Parabens
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS and SLES)
About a year ago we made a commitment to make a conscious effort about what we put ON our body - all those lotions, creams, soaps, sunscreens, and make-up that are slathered on our skin daily. We had dappled in this effort for years, trying to stay away from certain ingredients but definitely not always knowing what ingredients to avoid. But we knew what we wanted, skin care products that are effective and clean.
We love this fun fact: our skin cells are replaced every 2-4 weeks. As the main protection against the environment, your skin needs to be in top shape. This monthly renewal is a chance to start anew always.
Ultimately, you get to choose how you care for your own skin, mind, and body. You won’t ever regret the choice to expand your knowledge and skincare regimen! Remember, our skin cells renew completely about every 26 days. There is a chance to start anew always.
